Agents in the United States have been warned to be wary of drugs they’re given by a major drugmaker, and they’ve warned of the dangers of tainted venom.
The federal government says a recent SBI drug that’s being tested for the first time is a potentially dangerous agent of choice.
The company that makes the drug says the agent, called venustil, is a “safe and effective” treatment for a variety of cancers.
“Venustil is an approved cancer treatment and does not contain any venous thromboembolism (VTE) toxin,” the company said in a statement.
“VTE can cause bleeding or blockages in blood vessels.
Venustil should not be administered to people who are already receiving treatment.”
The company says the drug is currently being tested on about 200 people in the U.S. and Canada, and that it has not detected any serious side effects.
The drug is approved for use in humans only in patients with a specific genetic mutation that makes it highly resistant to many drugs.
